We are announcing the first R&D operation outside of Brazil. The Portugal office will be VTEX’s fourth office in Western Europe and is accepting Catalog’s future as its the challenge, which is at the heart of ecommerce. This news solidifies our expansion in the continent.
I have been part of the VTEX team for more than three years, and as I mentioned before, I have already experienced the challenge of creating a team from scratch in João Pessoa.
That job is one of the most valuable things I have experienced here. I came to support the education initiatives, I was part of the engineering team, and now I am embracing the challenge of creating the newest VTEX tech hub outside Brazil. Understanding the impact we have on society through our actions, seeing the company’s accelerated growth curve at this time, and making sure that each member of the team is an agent in the unpredictable future that we are building is hard to put into words.
VTEX has recorded strong growth in recent years. The last contribution resulted in the company being valued at 1.7 billion dollars, and it was not in vain we were named Leaders and also the fastest growing ecommerce platform in the world according to IDC last year. This points to one thing — if we want to keep our product on the cutting edge, we need to grow our team.
The only question left is why not Portugal? In addition to Lisbon being one of the most beautiful and charming capitals in the world, Portugal has a strong tech community, as well as high quality of life and safety. Plus, the weather is similar to the weather in Brazil, which is a factor for us. Finally, having digital nomads here gives us a different perspective on the product we are building. It is the perfect match. We are very excited.
It is worth mentioning again that we created the João Pessoa hub at the end of 2019, which is our great success story. About a year after its launch, the operation surpassed the 40 people mark. That number was above our initial planning. In that same period, the hub also became the third-largest VTEX office in the world, and we believe our new operation in Portugal will follow the same path.
At VTEX, we decided that each new operation must have at least one focus point, an aspiration for the long-term development of the site we are exploring. For Portugal, the challenge will be Catalog, the heart of ecommerce. There is no ecommerce without Catalog, period. Catalog simulates the physical experience in a store: reading product labels, looking at the description, quantity, and so forth. This is what allows retailers to offer clients products and services on their virtual stores
This product has the mission of providing an extremely modern and simple experience to create and manage products in the most diverse business segments among the 32 countries in which VTEX operates, which are not trivial markets. We provide services to China, Japan, and Asia, among other markets, each one having its own peculiarities.
